At McLeod Medical Centers, we believe that all women should have convenient access to the specialized medical care they require. That is why we offer women’s health services and suggest that all women take the time each year to receive a well woman exam. A well woman exam is an important tool in taking control of your health and detecting any issues that may become more serious over time.
Your annual well woman exam will consist of a pelvic exam and a breast exam. Depending on how old you are and whether you are sexually active, your exam may also include a pap smear. Each of these exams plays a vital role in identifying health problems before they become more serious and can provide early detection for issues such as breast cancer and cervical dysplasia. Finding these problems early can make an important difference in the range of treatments available.
There are a few different steps included in the breast exam portion of your well woman exam at our primary care clinics. First, our women’s health specialist will perform a visual examination, checking your breasts for any visual abnormalities such as shrinkage or bulging. Your doctor will also examine the color and symmetry of your breasts and they will examine the nipple and areola for any flattening or other abnormalities. The second part of your breast exam will include palpation of each breast and physical examination of both the underarm area and breast for lumps or abnormal tissue. Depending on your age and other risk factors, or if your doctor finds any problems they think require further examination, you may also be referred to a mammography specialist to follow-up with.
Your annual well woman visit at our clinics will also include a complete pelvic exam, including inspection of the exterior genitalia, a bimanual examination, and a speculum examination. The speculum examination may also include a pap test, which involves taking a sample of cells from your cervix and uterine fornix to check for any potential abnormalities. This is an important step in screening for human papilloma virus (HPV) and cervical cancer.
In addition to offering these important annual exams, our women’s health specialists at McLeod Medical Centers of NM also offer contraceptive counseling and family planning services. We believe that women should be fully informed when it comes to making decisions about contraception and pregnancy. Our experienced doctors and medical staff provide education and information about not only oral contraception, but other forms of hormonal contraception, as well as intrauterine devices (IUDs), and other methods. If you or a female family member have questions about contraception options, please feel free to stop by one of our clinics, where a trained doctor can answer your questions honestly and completely.
At McLeod Medical Centers, we understand how important it is for you to find a women’s health specialist you can feel comfortable with during your annual well woman visits and beyond. That is why we strive to create welcoming and compassionate office environment where you can feel comfortable and at ease.
